Valerie Sirenko has been teaching writing and literature for the past seven years. In her teaching, she encourages students to think about writing as the challenge of matching one’s writing choices to the effect one wishes to produce on a specific audience. In addition to writing and rhetoric, she specializes in American literature, African American literature, and the relationship of literature to the law. Formerly, she worked on the editorial staff at Duke University Press, and her work has appeared in or is forthcoming from journals such as ESQ: A Journal of Nineteenth-Century American Literature and Culture, Western American Literature, and Studies in American Indian Literature. Her interest in social justice issues has been shaped by her work with NGOs in Bolivia and Peru.
