The Women’s Health Lab is part of the Department of Psychology at Seattle Pacific University. The lab is housed within the undergraduate research suite in Marston Hall. We have several active members all investigating women's health issues. Our lab is equipped to measure psychological, physiological, and neuroendocrine stress responses to various laboratory stressors. Topics being investigated by the Women’s Health Lab team include:

  • Interrelationships among menstrual cycle phase, stress, impulsivity, and trait mindfulness in women
  • Mindfulness meditation effects on cardiac vagal control in women with severe premenstrual symptomatology
  • Mindful Body Awareness effects on cardiac vagal control in women
  • The effect of Mindful Body Awareness on the relationship between poor body image and stress in women

Biography

Kathy Lustyk photo

M. Kathleen B. Lustyk, PhD is Professor of Psychology and Primary Investigator of the Women's Health Lab at Seattle Pacific University (SPU). Dr. Lustyk also holds affiliate faculty positions in the School of Nursing and Department of Psychology at the University of Washington (UW). Work in the Women's Health Lab seeks to explicate the psychophysiological and neurobiological mechanisms underlying the effects of mindfulness in women. Made possible by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Dr. Lustyk investigated brain activation patterns in response to craving and other appetitive cues in alcoholic women treated with Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP). Along with her interests in mindfulness and more generally Women's Health, Dr. Lustyk served as a drug consultant informing the development of new treatments for premenstrual symptomatology while considering quality of life issues in women. Dr. Lustyk also serves as a Mindfulness Speaker for the FACES conferences led by Dr. Richard Fields.
