Why read international literature?
"What's the use of stories that aren’t even true?" Haroun asks in Rushdie’s tale. How do stories show us the contestation within societies, especially the battles over collective memories? What nervous conditions develop in characters, and does the text attempt a decolonization?
This course will explore a variety of texts, with styles ranging from the graphic memoir to realism to postmodernism to postcolonial, focusing on a story based in Africa, post-WWII Japan, Iran, and India.
